Egotistical managers are killing your company.
In my early 20s, I had a boss that was dripping with arrogance. It was repulsive. All of my co-workers couldn't stand being around him. He sucked the oxygen out of the room. The problem was he had such a major inferiority complex that he had to puff himself up to try to get others to think he was big—small-minded man. I did everything I possibly could to get out of that job.
My next boss was fun to be around. He made me feel smart. He regularly asked me how he could develop me into a leadership role. I was floored. I came to work and gave him all I had. In the 3 years that I worked for this man, I was promoted twice and learned more about sales than I could have ever fathomed. He ended up transferring to another state, and I gave my 2-weeks notice as soon as he left. If he wasn't there, I didn't care about the company.
Do you see the magic in this scenario? I didn't have a manager. I had a leader that I was willing to go to war with.
