Speaking to a smaller crowd (50 or fewer)? Take the time to shake every single hand in the room. You'll build rapport and create a personal connection that will pay off when you get up to speak. 

Have a massive audience at a conference? Before you get up on stage, walk through different sections of the room, say hello, and engage with people.
