🎤 Public Speaking: The Skill That Changes Everything

🟩I love public speaking.

🟩I don't mind public speaking.

🟩I don't like public speaking.

✅I would rather die than do public speaking.

Some people actually check that box!

Public speaking is scary. Most of us don't feel comfortable standing in front of people and taking responsibility for their attention. More than 75% of the population fears public speaking.

However, public speaking skills are essential, and if you can become comfortable speaking in front of a group, you're already way ahead of the crowd. Not only are you admired for being a good speaker, but it can also do amazing things for your career. You become a highly prized team member when you can communicate effectively with a group. The benefits of becoming a strong, confident public speaker can transfer to many other aspects of your professional and personal life.

In this article, I'll discuss some tips for improving your public speaking skills as well as the benefits you'll gain by becoming a strong public speaker.

Suggestions for becoming a more confident and skilled public speaker:

  1. Be prepared. Proper preparation will make you feel more confident and comfortable. Know your talk like the back of your hand; it's the best way to combat anxiety. This reduces the risk of stumbling over your words or, even worse, freezing up on stage (we all know that's scary and discouraging). But if you know your content, you'll speak on autopilot and let your preparation do the talking.
  2. Make the value you're sharing more important than yourself. In most cases, people are NOT there to hear what you say; they are there to learn how to improve their lives or businesses. Focus on sharing tons of value. If you do that, your worries about your speaking skills will take a back seat.
  3. Keep things simple. Newbie speakers cram too much info into too little time. There are sooo many charts, graphs, and other visual aids. It's baffling. No one can remember all that. Just determine the most essential facts and focus on those. Keep your listeners engaged by being brief and to the point.
  4. Imagine you're in the audience. What does your audience want to get from your speech? Be sure to deliver it! Audience desires will vary from event to event, so stay flexible and creative in your approach to public speaking engagements.
  5. Record yourself. Set up a camera and record yourself. I know watching and hearing yourself speak is awkward (maybe painful). Yet, seeing how you appear and sound to others is essential. First, listen to it without watching yourself. How do you sound? Are there too many "umms" and awkward pauses? Take notes on how you can improve. Next, watch yourself without the audio. How do you look? Do you have any embarrassing or annoying mannerisms? Do you shuffle your feet or sway back and forth? Again, take notes. Now, listen and watch simultaneously. What can you improve? Finally, take notes, make the necessary adjustments, and re-record yourself. Continue the process until you've mastered your speech.

Public speaking might be scary, but it's one of the most essential business skills, and mastering it can unlock many benefits beyond the podium.

We admire confident, effective communicators and good speaking skills, which are revered in the workplace. From captivating audiences to conveying compelling narratives, being comfortable with public speaking can significantly enhance your storytelling abilities. It can be well worth your time to hone your presentation skills.

Practice as much as you can and strive to improve constantly. Not many people make an effort to become a better public speaker. A little work can radically set you apart from your peers.

Public speaking boosts confidence and makes you a more persuasive and engaging storyteller. Let's review some rewards for improving your public speaking skills.

Confidence Breeds Conviction:

Confidence will radiate through your storytelling as you become proficient at public speaking. When you're comfortable, the crowd is, too. Your delivery becomes more assured, and your message gains credibility. This is good. Confidence is contagious. That means it draws listeners in and makes them more receptive to your story.

Mastering the Art of Delivery:

Compelling storytelling goes beyond the content. It's also about the how. Public speaking helps you hone your vocal modulation. Soon, your pacing and body language improve, allowing you to convey emotions and nuances better. A skilled speaker can captivate an audience with their delivery—vividly bringing the story to life.

Connecting on a Personal Level:

Good storytelling is about the ability to connect with your audience on a personal level. Think of public speaking as a platform. On this platform, we build rapport and forge emotional connections with listeners through shared experiences, humor, or vulnerability. A compelling storyteller can even evoke empathy and resonance.

Adaptability in Communication:

It's logical to tailor your message to different audiences and contexts. Adaptability overlays perfectly onto storytelling, so you can morph your narrative to resonate with any crowd. You might be addressing colleagues in a boardroom, leading a team meeting, speaking at a conference, or shouting on the street corner. The ability to adapt promises that your story remains relevant and impactful.

Capturing Attention and Retaining Interest:

We have entered the era of short attention spans. It sucks, but it is true. Public speaking teaches you to hook your audience and keep their attention throughout your presentation. The first few moments are crucial for capturing attention and setting the stage for engagement. Retaining interest will be worked out in the preparation phase and then through trial and error.

Overcoming Fear and Embracing Vulnerability:

Public speaking forces us all to confront our fears. It pushes us violently outside our comfort zones. You'll naturally and necessarily become more comfortable with vulnerability and authenticity on stage, which is when you develop a deeper connection with your audience. This willingness to be vulnerable is the backbone of powerful storytelling. I hope you'll share meaningful narratives that resonate on a human level.

Mastering, let's just say, growing in public speaking is a journey that goes far beyond the spotlight. You become a more confident and persuasive communicator by working on your speaking skills. That will happen! It'll elevate your storytelling quickly. Even if you don't plan to become a pro public speaker, the skills and confidence you'll gain by improving your public speaking skills will add value all over the place. Do it; embrace the power of the podium. Watch your stories captivate, inspire, and resonate far and wide.
