The Perfect Length for Storytelling ๐Ÿ‘‡

1–2 Minutes and in under 20 Seconds.

Here’s When to Use Each...

One of the biggest questions I hear about storytelling is: How long should my story be?

The answer depends on your situation, but here’s the key: people’s attention spans are shorter than ever, so your stories must be concise and intentional.

1–2 Minute Stories: Captive Audiences

When you have a captive audience, like during a staff meeting or a scheduled presentation, you have the figurative power of the "microphone" in your hand. This is your opportunity to dive into the details and take your listeners on a journey.

Tips for 1–2 Minute Stories:

-Keep it engaging: Stay focused and cut out unnecessary details.
-Use vignettes for longer stories: If your story is longer (e.g., 6 minutes), break it into smaller parts or vignettes, each tied together by a consistent theme. This helps keep your audience engaged throughout.
-Mix it up: Alternate between stories and data (if presenting) to keep the flow dynamic.

20-Second Stories: Capturing Attention in the Moment

When you're pulling someone out of their busy day, whether in the office or during a quick conversation, your story should be 20 seconds or less.
Why? Because we've trained our brains to bounce. Think about how we scroll through social media or leave websites within seconds. Attention is a commodity.

Tips for 20-Second Stories:

-Focus on simplicity: Use the "Ordinary World → New Reality → Hero Inserted" framework.
-Ordinary World: Where were you or your hero before?
-New Reality: What changed?
-Hero Inserted: Who or what made the change happen?
-Be direct: Every word counts, no fluff.

The Takeaway

The length of your story depends on your audience and the moment. Use longer, detailed stories for presentations and meetings. Use short, punchy stories to grab attention in quick interactions.
